'Doxing' originated in 1990s hacker culture, derived from 'documents' → 'docs' → 'dox'. By the early 2010s, 'doxxing' (double-x) emerged as a spelling that more clearly conveys the verb form. Both spellings refer to the same harmful act: compiling and publishing someone's personal information (name, address, phone, employer, family) with intent to expose them to harassment, threats, or violence.
The double-x spelling has become more common in mainstream media (NYT, Wired, Guardian generally use 'doxxing'). The single-x is still seen in older or more technical sources.
