Skopio vs Maltego: Affordable OSINT Toolkit Without the Pro License
Maltego is the de-facto pro OSINT investigation toolkit — but it requires a desktop license and paid transform packages. Skopio offers comparable OSINT depth via web and Telegram, with per-query packs accessible to any budget.
At a glance
Maltego is the most established commercial OSINT platform, used by law enforcement, threat intelligence teams and corporate security at scale. It offers a powerful graph-based investigation interface with 'transforms' (pluggable data sources) for everything from phone lookup to blockchain analytics. Its trade-offs: a Pro license costs roughly $1,000-2,000/year per seat, additional transform packages add hundreds-to-thousands more, and it requires a desktop client that doesn't run on mobile. Skopio targets the same OSINT category with a different model: hosted (no install), per-query packs starting at $7, accessible from web and Telegram. For graph-based investigation workflows that visualize entity relationships, Maltego still wins; for direct query/lookup workflows where you just need structured answers to specific OSINT questions, Skopio's economics dominate.

Why people switch
Most users 'considering Maltego' aren't yet Maltego customers — they got pricing and balked. For individual journalists, fraud investigators at small teams, due-diligence consultants and curious individuals, Maltego's pricing model doesn't fit. Skopio gives the same category of answer (who is behind this phone, this email, this domain, this wallet) without the license fee or learning curve. Existing Maltego customers running graph-based investigations should keep Maltego — Skopio doesn't replicate that. Many investigators use both: Maltego for the deep multi-pivot graph work, Skopio for the everyday quick lookups.
Migration guide (5 steps)
- 1Sign up for Skopio (skopio.io or @skopiotestbot in Telegram).
- 2Identify a Maltego workflow you do frequently that's actually a sequence of single-source queries (not a true graph exploration).
- 3Run those queries in Skopio — for one-shot lookup workflows, you'll get the same answer in one structured report.
- 4Calculate ROI: how many Skopio packs would cover your annual Maltego license fee? Typically 5-10 large packs ($175-420 each) match a single Pro seat — but you only buy what you use.
- 5If your work depends on graph visualization and multi-pivot transforms, keep Maltego. Use Skopio as the everyday quick-answer tool.
Frequently asked questions
Is Skopio a Maltego replacement?+
Partial. Skopio replaces the 'send a query, get a report' workflow that many Maltego users actually use most. It does not replace the graph-visualization workflow — that's Maltego's signature feature and isn't replicated.
Can I export to Maltego format?+
Not currently. We export JSON (Pro tier). For Maltego graph-import, you'd need to manually format. This is on our roadmap for enterprise customers.
What about transforms?+
Maltego's value comes from its transform marketplace — pluggable data sources by category. Skopio bundles its data sources by category internally; you don't manage them as separate purchases. The trade-off: less flexibility, more accessibility.
Why is Skopio so much cheaper?+
Different business model. Maltego sells to enterprise via license + transforms. Skopio is self-serve per-query. The unit cost is lower because the operational overhead is lower.
Does Skopio have an investigation graph?+
Not currently. Future versions may add graph visualization. For now, results are linear/structured — like a research dossier.
