What is SOCMINT? Social Media Intelligence
“SOCMINT (Social Media Intelligence) is the subset of OSINT focused on collecting and analyzing publicly available information from social media platforms.”
Definition
SOCMINT emerged as a recognized OSINT discipline in the early 2010s as social media penetration approached saturation. Today, SOCMINT spans investigation of public Twitter/X feeds, VK and Instagram profiles, LinkedIn employment networks, Telegram public channels, and dozens of niche platforms. It's used in law enforcement, journalism, brand protection, recruiting, and fraud-prevention.
Modern SOCMINT tools tackle three problems: discovery (finding all profiles for a given identity), correlation (linking the same person across platforms), and content analysis (extracting intelligence from posts). Skopio's social and username categories address discovery and correlation specifically — given a phone, email, or username, return the social-platform footprint. Content analysis is generally a separate discipline involving NLP, sentiment analysis, and threat-detection. Privacy boundary: SOCMINT works with publicly visible content. Private posts, DMs, and authentication-protected pages are out of scope for legitimate SOCMINT.

Frequently asked questions
Is SOCMINT legal?+
Yes when based on publicly visible information. Each platform has terms of service that may restrict automated scraping; legitimate SOCMINT uses official APIs or human-rate-limited browsing.
Can SOCMINT see private posts?+
No. Private posts, DMs, and authentication-walled content are not OSINT. Accessing them without authorization is hacking, not SOCMINT.
Which platforms are most useful for SOCMINT?+
Depends on geography. Globally: LinkedIn (employment), Twitter/X (public discourse), GitHub (technical identity). Russia/CIS: VK, OK, Telegram public. Asia: Telegram, Discord, regional platforms. Skopio's username category covers 350+.
What's the difference between SOCMINT and OSINT?+
SOCMINT is a subset of OSINT specifically focused on social media. All SOCMINT is OSINT, but not all OSINT is SOCMINT (WHOIS lookup, breach-corpus search, public-records research are OSINT but not SOCMINT).
How do I do SOCMINT ethically?+
Three rules: (1) only use publicly accessible content, (2) respect platform terms of service, (3) don't aggregate or amplify in ways that harm individuals. SOCMINT done right informs decisions; done wrong it enables stalking.
